My Four Opening Sequences

Analysis of 'The Sixth Sense' & 'Se7en'

During this lesson we watched the film trailer and the opening sequence for the films 'The Sixth Sense' and 'Se7en'. From watching these we were able to see for ourselves the difference between the two and how much of an effect they have on the audience.

'Se7en'

The film trailer for 'Se7en' was really effective because it had a lot of shots and was very quick paced which, is one of the elements a film trailer should have. The quick and short shots used was effective because it creates a sense of anticipation and excitement for the viewer. It makes the audience want to know the outcome and what is going to happen next. The soundtrack used is effective because it creates the sense of tension and build up that, something exciting is going to happen next.

The opening sequence of 'Se7en' is really effective because it shows thi
ngs that appear very sinister and mysterious. When the names of the actors appear on the screen the font used is a sort of messy handwriting which makes the mood appear eerie and scary. The shots used in the opening sequence are really effective because they only show half of what is wanted to see by the audience. The shots create an element of mysteriousness because the shots move quickly between each other. There is a particular shot when we see somebody is writing which is effective because the audience doesn't actually see what is being written so it makes the audience hang on there edge of their seat wanting to know what will happen next.

The trailer for 'The Sixth Sense'

The soundtrack that is used on the trailer of the film is really effective because, it is starts off slow and gradually builds up which creates a sense of tension and anticipation. The trailer has loads of quick paced shots that creates a rush through and
sense of adrenaline through the audience's mind because we are b
eing bombarded with an overload of visual information that generates excitement. The font used that shows the names of characters in screen is quite eerie because they fade in and out slowly on a black background.

The opening sequence of 'The Sixth Sense' is effective because the audience immediately get the establishment of the mood in which the film is trying to depict. The female character that appears in the first shot seems to be at unease as she is selecting her bottle of wine which lets the audience know that something is not right. The shot we get of the woman is seen through the crates so, it shows that she is being watched without her being aw
are. This generates a sense of eeriness because the audience is watching someone who does not know they are being watched.

Title Sequence VS Trailer

During this lesson we explored and analysed the differences between a film trailer and an opening sequence. We bullet pointed what the audience want when watching a film trailer and what the audience want when watching the opening sequence of a film.

What the audience want when watching a film trailer:

  • The parts of the film that look interesting
  • Sense of the plot
  • Grab your attention
  • Who is starring/ who it is made by
  • No give-aways
  • Montage editing (fast paced)
  • Loads of shots
  • Has to persuade viewer to watch the film

What the audience want when watching the opening sequence of a film
  • Has to draw you in but, not too much
  • Information on one of the characters
  • Establish the right kind of mood
  • Has to engage the viewer enough to watch the whole of the film
  • Create atmosphere
  • Familiarize/ establish setting
  • Voice over/ narrator (telling the story)
  • Soundtrack

Evaluation Of Preliminary Task EBI (Even Better If)

There were many difficulties that we faced during this task which was a temporary inconvenience.

Firstly when we took our camera to film the screen was broken so we could not film. We then went and got a digital camera but when we tried to film again the battery died. We then went and changed the battery but the battery died again and this caused a great deal of inconvenience. We then got another camera which finally worked and we were able to start filiming.

Another difficulty that we faced during the task was when we were trying to upload our video to the Mac. We put the USB cable into the wrong port of the camera which wasted a little bit of time. When we put the cable into the right port we were then able to successfully import our footage and edit it all.

Another difficulty we faced was when we were trying to save our finished piece. The Mac would not let us save iur work and as a result we had to import our footage and edit it all over again.

Evaluation Of Preliminary Task (WWW)

For the preliminary task we had to film and edit a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character with whom he/she then exchanges a couple lines of dialogue. During this task we had to make sure that we followed the aspects of continuity editing which included

Match on action
180 degree rule
Shot reverse shot

What went well in this task was we were able to successfully upload our video to youtube and then embed it into our blogs as evidence of completion of our task. We also successfully edited each of our shots quickly and efficiently to make sure that each shot fitted in with eachother.

Preliminary Task

Induction EBI (Even Better If)

One of the tasks from the induction that didn't go so well was the Jobsite task. We faced some difficulties during this task because some of the shots that we recorded had glitches and errors that we could not alter and there was not enough time to re-film them.

Induction WWW (What Went Well)

During the induction process my favourite task was the re-creation of the 'Push A Little Button' advert. This was my favourite task because I was able to explore and experiment taking different shots of buttons from different angles and deciding which shots looked presentable for the task. I was also able to learn how to sequence the shots together on i-Movie and I also learnt how to edit and cut the shots so that they fit in with the rest of the shots.

The Brief

To create the titles and opening of a new fiction film, to last a maximum of two minutes. I am interested in creating a thriller because I feel that this genre would be interesting to explore however I am also aware that the majority of the class will be creating a thriller as well. This means that I will have to work extra hard to make sure that my opening sequence stands out from everbody else's.
